The Sultan of Swing
okay, so Saddam Hussein has been hanged. i know this because the New York Post had a tasteful picture of Saddam's head with a noose photoshopped around it. what they didn't have was the awesome headline i titled this post with. they had something like King of Swing, which is okay, but c'mon New York Post! i expect better from you (or worse, depending on how you look at it).

comics and money
have you ever noticed how you'll spend more money during a sale?
let's say that, on a normal day, i go to the comic book store and see a $100 comic and a $50 comic. i won't buy the $50 comic because that's too high a price (unless i just got birthday money or something) and the $100 comic is out of contention entirely. but, take a 40% off sale and all of a sudden, the $100 comic looks great because it's only $60. that's really cheap! i am fucking sold, never mind that on any other day, i would have scoffed at a $60 price tag.

really now.
"Like Pontius Pilate JMS has washed his hands of Mongoose's new line of Babylon 5 novels saying its now a matter between Mongoose and Warner Bros."
settle down there, icv2. let's not compare Babylon 5 novels (that will most likely suck, by most accounts) to our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
...however, you can continue to compare JMS to Pontius Pilate. that's not over the top or anything.
note: the line of text quoted above is from the daily newsletter they send out, and not from the article itself, which i link to.

Top Ten Covers of All Time
after getting yelled at by halifax_slasher all week to do this, here it is in all it's glory...
...uhh, behind the cut, of course
#10

WildC.A.T.s v1 #21
look kids! it's Jim Lee trying to draw like Travis Charest! say what you will about this series or these characters, but i remind you that this was written by Alan Moore. also, it's the first team shot with the brand new team that Moore decided to play with: Mr. Majestic, Savant, Ladytron, Condition Red, and Tao. it's a pretty cool team shot.
#9

Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #4
oh Jim Steranko, how i love your covers! your use of black and white is second only to one (higher up on this list).
#8

Green Lantern #196
what're you looking at? i'll tell you. you're looking at the best Green Lantern of all time finally getting what he so richly deserves: the cover! and he looks so menacing too. those who worship evil's might, beware his power, Guy Gardner's light!
#7

Love and Rockets v1 #44
this cover is awesome because that's my dad on the cover, except my dad is without a mustache. i don't know who the woman is, but it's certainly not my mother. in fact, my mother is probably off-panel stalking towards them, getting ready to sock that woman in the mouth.
#6

Queen & Country #2
check out that desk. it's fucking messy. there's files and paperwork everywhere, but Tim Sale reminds you that Tara Chace is a field agent at heart with the one object in the whole place that draws your eyes: the knife she's holding.
#5

Wildcats v2 #4
there's something about Zealot in the bush that just does something for me. and it's drawn by Travis Charest, so there you go.
#4

Justice League #1
you see how every character has a different facial expression? that's Kevin Maguire for you. he's the artists with the best expressions in the business. and this cover proves, and has been copied ad naseum because of it (including by himself). also, i love Guy and that's a really good line.
#3

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For #1
Delia's massive silhoutte falling over Dwight's respectively small body tells you the whole story right there. this woman is gonna fuck him over but good. the inclusion of the blinds' shadows just makes this cover all the more noir. remember, this was back before my pal Frank stopped drinking and was still awesome at what he was doing.
#2

Uncanny X-men #101
Jean Grey rises from the ashes like the a Phoenix, suckas! also, Cyclops' cerebral nature is made totally apparent by his enormous noggin. more importantly, notice the complete absence of Wolverine on this cover. soak it in, because this doesn't happen ever again on a Marvel book.
#1

The Dark Knight Returns #1
the most iconic Batman image of all time! yes, it's a second cover by Frank Miller, but he's just that awesome (or was, at any rate). i never get tired of this image, ever.
so there you go. that's my top ten covers of all time (although they are subject to change as i remember other covers that are way better). feel free to post your own.

ST & BSG
i take perverse pleasure in watching Battlestar Galactica while wearing my "KAAAAAAAHN!" t-shirt and watching Star Trek while wearing my Frakkin' Toasters t-shirt. it just feels better for some reason.
