Friday Five

1. Who was your first crush?

Gabriela, a classmate of mine in kindergarten, although I think she had the crush on me and I was suddenly her boyfriend with no input.

2. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

Introvert, mostly. I like hanging out with people, but if given a real choice between going out to a party or staying at home, staying at home will win every time.

3. What is your favorite non-sexual thing you like to do with the love of your life?

Talking about our children not-yet-born.

4. Name one quirky habit your partner does that either annoys you or makes you grin.

Annoying: Won't stop pinching me ever. Grinning: When she gets my comic book references.

5. Do you believe in monogamous relationships?

I don't believe in any other kind.

Planet Earth

I've started watching 'Planet Earth' on the Discovery Channel, and oh man, it is freakin' awesome! These guys got some really spectacular shots of animals and nature all over the world, from that Russian Leopard of which only forty or so exist, to birds of paradise that do crazy dances to attract mates, to a shark attack on a seal, to cute baboons walking upright in a swamp with their front paws held out like they were on a balancing beam. And they haven't even started the deep sea stuff yet.

there are only two problems with this mini-series: 1) these guys know that they're doing all this great stuff with all this new technology and they will keep telling you so through the narrator (e.g. "This is the first time the Blue Bird of Paradise has ever been recorded in the wild," "With our high-definition digital cameras, we could slow down this attack which only takes one second, to forty-seven seconds.") The narrator is just so smug and self-satisfied and I reall wish she'd stop talking about their ridiculous tech and continue talking about the nature they're showing me. 2) "As always, where life thrives, trouble follows." This line was said after they showed a bunch of African animals in a swamp that springs up every year in the Kilimanjaro (which these animals trekked weeks for). These animals are drinking water, eating bugs and plants, and basically having a good time after walking through the desert for a long-ass time. Then the hyena shows up. That's not trouble, nature people, that's more life. I'm sick and tired of carnivorous predators being painted as the bad guys (especially after you just talked about how sad it is that there are only forty or so of those Russian Leopards left). They may not be as cute as the herbivores or whatever, but they're still part of nature. These guys serve a really important function too, and it's time they got their due.
